When Is the Best Time to Take Newborn Photos?
Our Experience
After 12+ years of working with newborns, we can confidently say: the most peaceful, gentle, and beautiful photos happen when your baby is between 5 and 20 days old.
During this window, babies sleep deeper, settle into natural curled-up poses more easily, and feel the most comfortable during the session.
But here’s the important part — if your baby is already 25, 30, or even 35+ days old, you can STILL get stunning newborn photos. Sessions with older newborns simply require a highly experienced photographer.
We photograph 5–7 newborns almost every day, so we know exactly how to work safely, patiently, and beautifully with babies of any age.
Why 5–20 Days Is Ideal
1. Babies sleep deeper
In the first weeks, sleep cycles are longer and calmer — which allows us to pose your baby gently without disturbing them.
2. Natural womb-like poses
Your baby still remembers the curled-up position from the womb, so they naturally settle into safe, cozy poses.
3. Less activity
After 3–4 weeks, babies become more alert and start waving their arms and legs — which makes classic newborn posing more difficult.
4. Fewer tummy issues
Before 20 days, babies tend to have fewer gas/colic moments, which keeps the session smoother and more comfortable.
What If My Baby Is 20–30+ Days Old?
This is one of the questions we hear the most. And the honest answer is simple — you can still have a beautiful newborn session at any age.
We regularly photograph babies who are 25–40 days old, and we have a special approach for older newborns.
Before the session, we send every parent a step-by-step preparation guide so the baby arrives calm, comfortable, and ready for photos.
With proper prep and an experienced photographer, you can still get adorable:
✨ wrapped poses
✨ shots of baby holding a tiny toy
✨ awake, expressive portraits
✨ family photos full of love
We always adjust the session to your baby — never the other way around.
Our Advice
If your baby is still very young (under 20 days) — it’s best to book early to secure a spot.
If they’re already older — just make sure your photographer has real experience with older newborns. This matters more than anything else.
What truly matters is capturing these moments.
They will never happen again.
